Top UK MC Jehst is the latest co-conspirator for April’s edition of Days And Nights At The Takeaway, which is released today.

“Jehst is an amazing and unique MC – his lyrics are so imaginative, honest, fearless, playful and evocative, and delivered so you can hear every word,” says Seb. “The idea of this tune was to do something with him that was more primal and with no loops in it. I wanted all the elements to be live. I improvised the backing track imagining I was playing a song and thinking of the drums as the melody.”

Seb sent the track, Seven Nine Zulu, to Jehst, who finished the vocals in The Takeaway a week later.

“When I heard the beat it just put me in mind of classic B-Boy breaks, that ESG, Wildstyle soundtrack type of sound. Late ‘70s Bronx shit,” explains Jehst. “That definitely influenced some of the references in the rhymes and the title in particular which is a nod to the Zulu Nation and growing up on how that New York hip hop sound and culture developed, through the Cold Chillin’ years and all that. In my mind I could just hear that Kane, Rakim type of composed, serious flow, kinda how Black Thought from The Roots rhymes.”

Accompanying the track is a brilliant remix from percussionist Tom Skinner under his Hello Skinny guise. “Listening to anything tom does always inspires me and also humbles me as a drummer.”

The next single from Days And Nights At The Takeaway, Sugah Sweet, is a collaboration between Seb and shadowy dubstep types LV (who also remixed the first release in the series), creating a bubbling hybrid of electronics, cut-up vocals and live drums.

“It was really amazing watching Si and Wil play together,” says Seb, “They’re so in tune with each other, it’s beautiful to see. Doing stuff with LV suddenly made me realise how much inspiration I’m getting doing these tracks with everyone, and how getting to know people by making music with them means that your instinct and trust become the most important parts of the creation.”

The remix this time is by the multi-talented Micachu, under her M.A.T.H.E.S. moniker

“Mica is for me a very special person – her music always inspires and moves me,” says Seb. “Her creativity constantly changes the way I feel about what music can be, and everything she creates is always so uniquely hers. I love what she created from our track.”

You can listen to the tracks below and download them now from our Bandcamp page.

The second instalment of Days And Nights At The Takeaway, is released this Friday. The new track, ‘Faint Eligible Remains‘, is a collaboration with multi-talented London-based composer/producer/guitarist Leo Abrahams.

“We started this track by using a machine leo took round called the luminist garden,” Seb explains, “It’s like a little garden made of wires that reacts when you run your fingers through it or play some sound on it”

The sounds generated by this intuitive, looping soundboard device were then supplemented by piano (played by both musicians) and guitar.

As with all the singles in the series, the piece is backed with a remix, this time by fellow Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland-founder Pete Wareham. You can hear the tracks now and purchase them from this Friday (Feb 24) on our Bandcamp page.

Days And Nights At The Takeaway is a new monthly singles club, curated by Polar Bear‘s Sebastian Rochford, which will run throughout 2012. On the last Friday of each month (payday!), The Takeaway will release a brand new track, featuring Seb collaborating with different musicians every time. Each single will be backed with an exclusive remix.

All the tracks will be recorded in Seb’s studio in a former London takeaway (hence the name). Seb will be working with some spectacular guests so keep your eyes peeled on The Takeaway for news, photos and videos.

The first release in the series, ‘Love A Sacred Path‘ features American poet & singer Gina Loring and British Indian vocalist Ranjana Ghatakand a superb b-side remix by Keysound/Hyperdub mainstays LV.

“Gina and Ranjana had wanted to do something together for a while, and we made this track when Gina was over from LA for a couple of weeks,” says Seb of the hook-up, “This is what we made. Hope you enjoy it!”

You’ll be able to hear and purchase it on our Bandcamp page from January 27th.

Make sure you’re up-to-date with all the latest news on the project by signing up for our mailing list on the right hand side.
